The Jam: M. Ward’s Hold Time

Take nostalgia and native sounds, mix with a new mind.
Tastes a lot like: Apple Cinnamon Jam- Fresh yet heart warming. Could eat it in the summer, could eat in the winter. You could eat it all year round until the end of time because it’s a delicious take on a classic taste.
It has been brought to my attention in the past I don’t need to internalize music like I do. But isn’t that the point of art ? To create something to induce reactions in your audience ? In which case, I believe this album succeeds on an exemplary level. M. Ward… what a talented sonuvabitch. Known for his affinity for studio reverb and old ‘n golden influences, he has put together an album that sounds and feels like a memory- something distant yet so close to your heart. Instrumentally, the album is an exploration of organic sounds and textures. He is not trying to invent some new astounding effect to blow your mind, but rather arranging fundamentally beautiful tones and tactics, layering them with his beguiling vocals that send you on a number of trips throughout the album. “Rave On” is a spring day in new found love circa 1956, butterflies nearly bursting out your belly button. Then there are those introspective moments such as on “Stars Of Leo”; he wails, “I get so low I need a little pick me up / I get so high I need to bring me down” and as it crescendos I couldn’t help but think to myself: YES, THAT’S EXACTLY HOW I FEEL ! And then on comes tracks like his Neil Young cover/duet with Lucinda Williams “Oh Lonesome Me” and you’re sitting inside on a rainy night contemplating your plights. Every song encompasses some time and space that most of us have never experienced while resonating with modern relevancy. This album is a true masterpiece of folk rock that not only exhibits timeless orchestrations but contemporary mastery.
PS. How beautiful & fitting is the album artwork ?!
PPS. This is seriously one of my most favorite albums ever. Not even exaggerating.
